Climate Trace - Chasing the Emitters
Dr. Peter Carter, Paul Beckwith and Regina Valdez discuss “Climate Trace,” a website, which provides an independent greenhouse gas emissions tracking resource through the use of satellites, other remote sensing techniques, and artificial intelligence.
This video was recorded on June 14th, 2023, and published on July 2nd, 2023.
Some of the topics discussed:
- How Climate Trace is an exciting new website with a database of all human-caused emissions from all major sources. Power plants, refineries, rice cultivation, cement production, shipping, you name it.
- How the number one site of GHG emissions is from the Permian area in the southwestern part of the United States in the state of Texas.
- How Climate Trace tracks CO2, methane and nitrous oxide emissions along with a composite of all of these called CO2 equivalent or CO2e.
- How the Climate Trace website is extremely important because metrics are very important along with the need to quantify the emissions and the emitters.
- How we’ve already doubled the CO2 in the atmosphere if one considers equivalent CO2, CO2e, as opposed to just CO2.
- Suggestions to improve the site by capturing the emissions from wildfires, aerosols and carbon sinks and sources to provide an overall picture of emissions.
- How the emissions from wildfires are especially bad because not only do wildfires destroy the carbon sink and reduce the amount of carbon captured, but they also release all the carbon embodied in the trees themselves in the form of smoke.
- and much more . . .
