Jem Bendell in Conversation with Paul Beckwith - At COP27
Dr. Jem Bendell, professor of Sustainability Leadership at the University of Cumbria, joins Paul Beckwith in a conversation which took place at the United Nations COP27 event in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.
This video was recorded on November 9th, 2022, and published on January 22nd, 2023.
Some of the topics discussed:
- The circumstances and motivations that led to the creation and distribution of the paper “Deep adaptation: a map for navigating climate tragedy.”
- How the paper concludes that it is too late for industrial consumer societies, that they would break down because of the direct and indirect impacts of climate change.
- How, in the wake of the viral downloading of the paper, Jem has focussed on trying to help create an online network so people can meet each other and talk about this way of seeing the situation in the future.
- An observation of Twitter data showing what appears to be an upsurge against action on climate change, and how it is reflective of a segment of society that is rebelling against what they believe is a ploy to control them or as a way for corporations to try and make money out of the climate disaster.
- How the global south will eventually organize together to make sure the West degrows.
- The reason why talking about the reality of the breakdown of industrial consumer societies is taboo in mainstream media and from politicians.
- And much more . . .
