COP27 Recap
Dr. Peter Carter, Paul Beckwith and Regina Valdez are joined by guest panelist Dan Galpern to share their perspectives on COP27, which took place in November 2022 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.
This video was recorded on December 6th, 2022, and published on December 19th, 2022.
Some of the topics discussed:
- How Secretary General António Guterres said in his opening address that humanity is on a highway to climate hell.
- How it was referred to as the ‘implementation COP,’ and also the COP that was going to address climate justice, loss and damages or climate reparations.
- How much of the aid offered to developing nations suffering from climate related disasters is offered in the form of loans.
- How major emitting countries agreed to the new Loss and Damage fund, even though commitments were not strong in terms of actually providing resources for that fund.
- How COP27 robustly failed in the area of mitigation of climate change and how that failure was part of a struggle to assert the right to continued use of fossil fuels unimpeded largely by the pledges made through the Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement.
- How John Kerry, suffering from COVID, did note that the United States, the world’s largest historical emitter came out in favor of a phase down not only of coal, but also of oil and gas.
- How there’s very little interaction between the NGOs and the parties, i.e. governments of countries.
- How the loss and damages or climate justice, climate reparations themes of this COP did not address the central root cause of the problem which is the burning of fossil fuels.
- How the central theme of every single COP should be reducing fossil fuel emissions.
- and more. . .
