Adaptation and Mitigation

Special guests John D. Liu and Dr. Jem Bendell join Dr. Peter Carter, Paul Beckwith and Regina Valdez at COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, to discuss the topic of adaptation and mitigation with respect to climate change.

The response to the climate emergency requires both mitigation and adaptation. Mitigation refers to efforts to reduce or prevent emission of greenhouse gases. Adaptation is the process of adjusting to current or expected impacts of climate change. The need for adaptation varies from one location to another, depending on the risk to human or ecological systems.

The panel will present various facets of the urgent need for a mitigation and adaptation response such as covered in the IPCC’s Sixth Assessment report as well as the need for governments, corporations and the media to communicate to citizens in a more meaningful way when describing the gravity of the climate crisis and the consequent societal and behavioral changes that will be needed.

The panel will also cover the topic of the restoration of ecosystems, technological innovations such as renewable energy, various means of drawing down carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as well as various forms of solar radiation management.
