Adaptation Opportunities
Special guest Julie Johnston, sustainability education coach, joins Paul Beckwith and Regina Valdez to discuss Adaptation Opportunities.
This video was recorded on October 13th, 2022, and published on November 6th, 2022.
Some of the topics discussed:
- The difference between climate mitigation and climate adaptation.
- The Small Island Developing State (SIDS) Tuvalu’s plans to adapt to rising sea levels.
- The need to perform and look at vulnerability studies for a given area to find the weakest points with respect to climate adaptation. Is it the power grid? Is that the type of structures that their houses are made of? The materials? etc.
- The consideration to ameliorate building codes so that they are strengthened and reinforced and provide some sort of way to reduce the anticipated climate hazards for a given area.
- The need to move away from an area if there is no practically feasible way to adapt to the climate hazards of that area.
- The fact that insurance companies are having to not pay out claims unless the money goes towards making the house or business building more resilient to the next climate event.
- How some towns have actively planned their communities to be resilient to anticipated climate events.
- How the adoption of renewable energy, which is a mitigation measure, can often result in providing a more resilient home or community saving both time and energy.
- and more. . .
