Pakistan's Pluvial Plight
Join Dr. Peter Carter, Paul Beckwith and Regina Valdez as they discuss how climate change contributed to the humanitarian crisis in Pakistan, which now urgently requires substantial amounts of international aid.
This video was recorded on September 14th, 2022, and published on September 18th, 2022.
Some of the topics discussed:
- How at least a third of Pakistan is completely submerged exposing it to all kinds of horrible health effects.
- How Pakistan has for decades been recognized as one of those most climate change vulnerable countries.
- How monsoons are going to get worse in the sense they’re going to get heavier, but they’re also going to get more erratic. This was corroborated by the fact that the rain in August was 240% above the average.
- The catastrophic results showed that Pakistan lost 65% of its main food crops including 70% of its rice, its main crop, in addition to losing 3 million of its livestock.
- How 40% of their agricultural land, for the next few years, has been ruined.
- How climate change has led to this terrible catastrophe.
- How UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, after visiting the area, was quoted as saying “I’ve seen many humanitarian disasters in the world, but I have never seen climate carnage on this scale.”
- How, at the time this video was recorded, 1400 people had died with the number going up with 33 million people having been impacted, which is even higher than the 2010 terrible Pakistan floods where approximately 22 million people were impacted.
