The oceans play a vital and key role in the whole system of the planet and they are changing in ways that are going to make climate change much worse as we move forward into the future.

Join Dr. Peter Carter, Paul Beckwith and Regina Valdez as they discuss the critical state of our oceans and its impact on our climate. The UN declared June World Ocean month, so this video was produced as a follow up to our first video that focused on oceans entitled ‘Oceans in Crisis.’ The video was recorded on June 11, 2021.

Highlights include:

• More than 10% of Florida’s Manatee population has died since the beginning of 2021.
• Water quality in our oceans has worsened, a lot is due to run off from fertilizers and also sewage and septic leaks increasing algal blooms.
• According to WWF Bycatch is apparently now 40%!!
• Every year, 300,000 small whales and dolphins are killed as Bycatch.
• In total 38 Million tonnes of sea creatures are unintentionally caught. That’s 40% of fish.
• Up to 1 Million tonnes of fishing gear that are added to the litter of the oceans every year.
• Bottom trawling churns up 22 Billion tonnes of seabed every year.
• Since 1993, the rate of ocean heat uptake has doubled and is accelerating.
• The combination of rising seas overrunning coastlines with more intense more energetic wave action is resulting in an increased level of erosion occurring on coastlines.
