In this episode we introduce the Climate Intervention Environmental Impact Fund (CIEIF), a unique family-funded initiative that supports climate intervention field tests by financing rigorous environmental impact assessment and stakeholder outreach. Fund manager and environmental attorney Peter Jenkins and science advisor Dr. Renaud de Richter explain how the fund focuses on projects with real-world field trials that can scale to meaningful climate benefits, rather than basic research or conventional adaptation and clean energy efforts.

Our guests walk through the kinds of interventions the fund has already supported, including biochar, enhanced rock weathering, ocean alkalinity enhancement, atmospheric methane removal, and glacier-related projects aimed at slowing sea-level rise and tipping points. They also discuss why robust impact analysis, stakeholder engagement with groups such as Indigenous communities and local fishers, and transparent publication of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) results are essential for gaining permits and public acceptance for any serious climate intervention.
Panelists Dr. Peter Carter and Paul Beckwith put these efforts in the wider context of an accelerating climate crisis, stressing that large-scale greenhouse gas removal and carefully governed interventions are becoming imperative for our survival.
Peter Jenkins - Peter serves as the Manager of CIEIF. From 2021 to 2023 he was Chair of the Board of Advisors of the U.S. NGO Methane Action (www.methaneaction.org, now merged with Spark Climate Solutions, www.sparkclimate.org). He has been an environmental, land use, consumer, and personnel law attorney and advocate since 1983.
Dr. Renaud de Richter - Renaud is among the most knowledgeable scientists in the world on innovative climate interventions. He served for more than two years as Science Advisor to Methane Action. Born in Mexico City, Renaud has lived in France since 1973 and received his PhD. in 1989 from University of Science and Technology in Montpellier, France. He then was a postdoctoral researcher at the School of Pharmacy of the University of Minnesota.
