Description:

The panel will discuss climate repair and the need for urgent research in Greenhouse Gas Removal and Climate Engineering.

Panelists:

Dr. Shaun Fitzgerald
Shaun is the Executive Director of the Centre for Climate Repair at Cambridge (CCRC). Shaun is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering who works at the interface of academic research, business, government policy and public engagement. He has worked extensively in the commercialisation of new intellectual property arising from university research, and supported the UK government in the re-writing of policy documents for building standards. Prior to joining the Centre for Climate Change, Shaun was Director of the Royal Institution, overseeing the programme for engaging the public with science and engineering.

Dr. Leonardo Valenzuela Pérez
Leonardo Valenzuela Pérez is the Director of International Partnerships and leads the Global Ecosystem for Ocean Solutions (GEOS) at Ocean Visions. GEOS is a United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development endorsed program that articulates a multi-sectoral global network dedicated to the development and deployment of equitable and scalable ocean-based solutions to address climate change and major Sustainable Development challenges. Leonardo holds a PhD in Human Geography from the University of Sydney, as well as a Master of Human Settlements and the Environment and a Bachelor of Sociology from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile.

Jill Storey
Jill is the World Ocean Council Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) Advisor, working to facilitate the advancement of the Marine CDR sector to accelerate the transition to NetZero. Jill is working to create an Ocean CDR forum for industry ecosystem participants looking to advance research for collective benefit, develop good governance, facilitate investment opportunities, further carbon offset methodologies, and build strategic alliances, partnerships and paths to market. Jill is a qualified Chartered Accountant and a Chartered Taxation specialist, with an MBA and a Master’s in Environmental Science.

Paul Beckwith
Paul is a Climate System Scientist who has taught at the University of Ottawa in the Laboratory for Paleoclimatology, as well as at Carleton University. Paul is a well-known climate educator on YouTube with over 1,200 videos pertaining to climate science.

Herb Simmens
Herb is a member of the Board of Directors of the Climate Emergency Forum. He is also Co-founder of the Healthy Planet Action Coalition (HPAC). He has degrees from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and international Affairs from Princeton. He’s also studied at the London School of Economics. A Climate Vocabulary of the Future is Herb’s first book.
